WEEK 17
EXPLORING BOUNDARIES SOMATICALLY
This week I’d like to invite you to continue the exploration on boundaries.
Noticing where, when and with who does your body particularly brace around.
In what way is your boundary being overstepped? (Physical, mental, emotional … maybe sensory, by way of someones voice being too loud or lights being too bright)
What’s your usual strategy when a boundary has been crossed? Do you stay quiet, do you speak up, do you fight, do you escape?
USING THE ‘PUSHING AWAY’ EXERCISE IN REAL TIME …
Sometimes we don’t have the capacity to speak up and assert our boundary as our bodies can be quite overwhelmed with the activation that’s created from the boundary violation. Here’s where we can take a conscious pause, remove ourselves from the situation (bathrooms are a great place to go when in a public space) and take a couple of minutes, breathing and ‘pushing away’.
When you come back into the situation you may have a little more capacity to voice what you need.
Or you might not … which is absolutely fine.
(One step at a time)
Also explore how, just like in the live session, we can use our bodies to renegotiate our boundary. Such as:
- Turning our face away from the stimulus
— Take a step forwards or a step back (remember that setting a boundary isn’t always a ‘no’ and a step away, sometimes asserting our boundary may be stepping forwards)
BRINGING MANY PIECES TOGETHER …
Something to remember is that you also have your body and the many other somatic practices we’ve explored.
- Take conscious pause
- Orient to your environment
- Connect to a resource
All of these things are also fundamental in supporting you with your boundaries.
As always, if you have any questions & need any support - I’ll be in the Telegram group.
Love,
Alex X
